In Memoriam
Jane Harris
We are sad to relay the news that Jane Harris passed away two weeks ago. Her life was one defined by a continued love and practice of art. She always said that from grade school, when she drew an egg in art class, she knew she wanted to be an artist.
She followed that desire for over 90 years. Her work, which included an Ivy League education in art history, an apprenticeship with Lester Beal, a commercial career at Harpers Bazaar and Esquire Magazines, and making time to create art and constantly improve her skills even when she became a wife and mother, which was pretty unheard of in the 1950’s.
When she moved to the shoreline in the 70’s she became a member of a 9 person collaborative group of artists and worked with them throughout the 80’s. She continued to work collaboratively with two of the members and they were instrumental in forming the City Gallery.
Jane was still creating art right up until the end using a counter top in her kitchen as her studio as she worked on small art pieces and latterly sketch books which she exhibited in City Gallery in June 2021.
Her creativity and special sense of humor will be sorely missed.
